About

Japanese curry: It's the first thing I ever learned how to cook, and the last meal I ever want to eat.

I was born in Okinawa, Japan and lived there until kindergarten. My love of curry and cooking started young. We had a day in my Japanese daycare when all of the moms came in and we made our first meal together: Kare raisu (Japanese Curry).

Growing up in a Japanese-American household, we had curry about once a month. My mom would make a pot for dinner, and my brother and I would eat many, many servings. The leftovers were always better the next day.

At 22, I began experimenting with my own recipe from scratch, and after a move across the country to NYC, a lot of research, finding a food scientist, and testing many, many iterations, I created Chica's Curry. I'm so excited to share this with you and so grateful for all of the friends, family, and strangers that have encouraged me and gotten stoked for curry along the way!

Chica's curry is born out of a passion for sharing a comforting meal with friends and learning about cultures and techniques along the way. It's a work-in-progress, and it's made all the better with your help! I want my curry to be an ever-evolving and -improving dish, so please let me know how you make it and what you'd like me to tweak in the next batch!
